Graham Lawing

Graham Lawing has been studying traditional Venitian glassblowing techniques for over 7 years. His education in glass has been developed through traditional European style apprenticeship to numerous master glass artists. In traditional apprenticeships, Graham learned technical skill as well as many coveted traditional Italian glass blowing techniques. Over the years Graham has developed his own voice through these traditions. 

In his current body of work, Graham uses traditional incalmo and cane working techniques to illustrate abstractions of nature. His striking functional pieces use bold bands of color that are reminiscent of distant horizons. Graham’s connection to the natural world has been with him since long before his glass career. Growing up on the beach and now currently living in the mountains of Asheville, one can see his love of nature reflected in his glass.

Graham’s work is a harmony between elaborate technical skill and abstractions of nature combined, using minimal design. His use of line in these works is not only limited to bands of color incalmo. Graham also uses cane, which creates black lines that actually map the rigorous process and movement in the creation of the glass.  The black cane is twisted by hand; the heat that makes its movement possible. The result is a topography of both the physical process of glass making as well as a map of the artist's own memories of natural landscapes.  

Graham Lawing’s glass work is a incredible example of impeccable craftsmanship and elegant functional design, imbued with his deep connection to nature.
